Make Your Home Green, Part 2 · Nov 5, 01:06 PM

Once you’ve got good insulation and good air-sealing, the next thing you can do is invest in very efficient heating and cooling. There are all kinds of options for efficiency, including boilers, geo-thermal heat pumps, high SEER rated condensers. If your existing system is over 15 years old, chances are it will need to be replaced soon, and the building-code-required-system will be about 20% more efficient than your current system. We’d suggest you go beyond this. To be perverse, I like to say that a heating and air conditioning system that meets the building code is the worst system you can install without breaking the law. If you push the envelope a little, you can go well beyond building-code minimums, and substantially improve your current system. You’ll also save money on your monthly energy bills!
