A Sunroom Connecting to the Garden
This 1930’s cottage faced a large rear garden, yet offered little view or access. The owners wanted an informal family/breakfast room that felt “in the garden” and remained open to the kitchen and dining room. The new room was sited to provide direct access to an existing stone terrace. The tricky part was the roof: how to make it work without compromising second floor windows? The solution borrows from the English cottages that inspired the original house. Window muntin patterns and wall and ceiling trim were important to the feel and scale of the room. The existing kitchen was re-done and enlarged with a bay.
