As Principal of PFA, Matt leads the firm in pursuit of innovative solutions to tackle the region’s affordable housing shortfall and to bring low-to-zero energy buildings at a larger scale to the broader market.

Of his twenty-six years in the architectural field, Matt has spent the last twenty specializing in custom residential, affordable multifamily housing, and high-performance buildings.  His expertise ranges from high-rise modernizations to urban infill and adaptive re-use to custom single-family new construction.

Since his 2010 CPHC training, Matt has spearheaded the initiative to deliver Passive House-level performance in a variety of building typologies and residential scales.  The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Commons project is one such example – a retrofit of a 1960’s low-rise masonry apartment complex. The project is the first Phius-certified Passive House multifamily retrofit in the U.S.  The importance of this work was to clearly demonstrate that resource consciousness and affordability are not mutually exclusive, and in turn, re-establishing a sense of community to one of DC’s neglected neighborhoods.

Other notable examples of Matt’s passive building design experience include collaboration on the 2011 Solar Decathlon Empowerhouse project, DC Habitat for Humanity’s Ivy City Passive Townhouse project, Northern Neck Zero Energy House, Arlington Net Zero single-family residence, and the Fairmount Heights Net Zero Community project.
